When I joined 3DPlusMe as Lead Artist, I stepped into a unique role that blended creativity with cutting-edge technology. Our mission was clear: bring personalized 3D printed figurines to life by combining licensed intellectual property with custom design. Over time, I found myself not only leading the creative team but also collaborating closely with engineers and product partners to shape a seamless 3D printing experience for consumers.

Leading Creative Design for Licensed 3D Figurines
At 3DPlusMe, my primary responsibility was guiding the creative team that designed licensed figurines for our custom product pipeline. This meant working with well-known brands like Marvel and Ubisoft to ensure our designs met their standards and captured the essence of their characters. I often interfaced directly with representatives from these companies during the creative development phase, which required clear communication and a deep understanding of both artistic vision and brand guidelines.
Our process involved:
Translating 3D scans of customers into stylized, full-color figurines
Adapting licensed characters to fit the custom product format without losing authenticity
Ensuring the final designs were optimized for 3D printing technology
This role demanded a balance between artistic creativity and technical constraints, such as print resolution and material limitations. It was rewarding to see how our designs brought joy to customers who could hold a miniature version of themselves or their favorite characters.
Collaborating with Engineering to Build Core Technology
Beyond leading design, I worked closely with our CTO and engineering team to develop the core technology pipeline that powered 3DPlusMe’s platform. My creative background helped bridge the gap between technical development and user experience. I contributed insights on how design choices impacted print quality and user satisfaction.
Some key contributions included:
Advising on 3D scanning techniques to capture accurate facial features and textures
Helping refine the modeling pipeline to automate parts of the customization process
Troubleshooting issues related to color fidelity and print durability
This collaboration ensured that our technology was not only functional but also aligned with the creative goals of the product. It was a unique opportunity to influence both the artistic and technical sides of the business.

Supporting Marketing, Sales, and Retail Deployments
My role extended beyond the studio and lab. I traveled along the East Coast to support marketing and sales efforts at live customer-facing events. These events were crucial for demonstrating the technology and engaging directly with consumers. I helped explain the creative process and the technology behind the figurines, which helped build excitement and trust.
Additionally, I provided hands-on technical support during initial retail deployments, including at Walmart stores. This involved:
Debugging hardware and software issues on-site
Training retail staff on the technology and product features
Gathering customer feedback to inform future improvements
These experiences gave me valuable insights into how customers interacted with our product in real-world settings and highlighted the importance of seamless integration between creativity, technology, and customer service.

Reflecting on the 3DPlusMe Journey
Working at 3DPlusMe was a rare chance to lead creative design while actively shaping the technology behind personalized 3D printing. The company’s focus on a "3D-as-a-Service" platform allowed us to combine 3D scanning, modeling, and printing into a smooth experience that brought custom figurines to life. Collaborating with major IP holders and supporting retail deployments gave me a broad perspective on product development from concept to customer.
For product managers, designers, and recruiters interested in the intersection of creativity and technology, my time at 3DPlusMe shows how important it is to:
Foster close collaboration between creative and technical teams
Understand the constraints and possibilities of emerging technologies
Engage directly with customers and partners to refine the product experience
